Travers Smith lawyers consider the opportunities awaiting the legal profession’s next generation.
As we look ahead to 2017, there can be few more interesting places in the world than London. In spite of looming Brexit, the capital’s tech scene is booming – driven by a combination of plucky start-ups and enormous global players like Google funnelling money into new headquarters and jobs.
This technological innovation has collided with one of London’s other key areas of expertise, financial services. The resultant fintech revolution is, according to Travers Smith partner Dan Reavill, “bringing about disruption in a clearly identifiable market with big opportunities for the people who get it right”.
These developments have in turn stoked demand for lawyers as financial services regulation struggles to keep pace with the changes – so it’s handy that London is the world’s legal capital.
Yet, with the looming activation of Article 50 in March, there is fear that 30 years of growth could come to a grinding halt, as London’s openness – which has long been one of its key strengths – is curtailed. Of course, it’s also quite possible that Britain will go forth into the world to forge exciting new trading relationships.
On the evening of Wednesday 18 January Legal Cheek Careers is partnering with Travers Smith to look at what comes next for London. A panel of the firm's lawyers will deliver their insights about the future. They will also consider the key areas of opportunity that the firm’s international model – which functions through ‘best friend’ relationships with other independent law firms – is helping it to pursue as the tectonic plates of globalisation shift in the wake of Brexit and Donald Trump’s US election win.
After the Question Time-style panel discussion, running from 6-7pm, attendees will be able to chat to the panellists informally over drinks and nibbles. Eighty (free) places are up for grabs.
Apply to attend below. You'll be asked to submit a CV and two questions for the panel. The CVs of those offered places will be passed on to Travers Smith’s graduate recruitment team.
Students of all levels are welcome, but places are limited.
This event is now fully booked.
