About the Legal Apprenticeship programme If a full time university degree isn’t the route for you and you want to earn whilst you learn, our new Legal Apprenticeship programme is a fantastic alternative route to working in law and qualifying as a solicitor. This new and innovative scheme is designed to help the successful candidate develop legal and business skills whilst completing formal training. It is a six year structured training programme which combines work and study. It includes a four year part-time LLB Hons Law Degree followed by the Legal Practice Course (LPC) and the Professional Skills Course (PSC) to be completed in the final two years. Based in our London office, the apprentice will spend the first 12-18 months in Business Services departments (such as Risk and Compliance, Legal Training and the Information Centre) to gain a broad understanding of how the firm operates before starting work in our legal groups. By the end of the six years the apprentice will have the same level of qualification as trainee solicitors who have completed their training through the traditional route. Who can apply for the apprenticeship? The programme is expected to attract candidates from a range of backgrounds who are keen to start their careers or make a career change but who all want to immediately begin building their legal experience. The apprenticeship is open for all to apply, however, we would typically be looking for candidates who have or are predicted the following: • AAB at ‘A’ level (or equivalent) • A-C in GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) In addition to the above we are looking for well-rounded, innovative individuals who can demonstrate a drive for results, good verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to analyse, with good judgement and excellent interpersonal skills. The majority of successful applications will have received the minimum requirements set out above. If your application does not meet these benchmarks due to mitigating circumstances, you may still apply. Please be prepared to bring along supporting evidence as to why we should consider your application further. We may also require supporting evidence from your school or college. What is the Application/Recruitment process? Stage 1: Completion of online application form Stage 2: Completion of online verbal reasoning test Stage 3: 30 minute competency and motivational based telephone interview with a member of the HR team Stage 4: Attendance at assessment day during which candidates will complete a 45 minute interview with a Partner and/or Associate, a group exercise and a written exercise and/or presentation assessment More information The programme will start on Monday 5 September 2016. A starting salary of £18,000 will be paid to the apprentice. The salary will increase as the apprentice becomes more experienced and gains qualifications. By the end of the six years the salary will be equivalent to that paid to trainee solicitors who have also completed their period of qualification. Mayer Brown will cover the cost of all studies with the exception of the LLB. Government student loans will be available to cover the costs of the LLB. All studies including the LLB, the LPC and the PSC will be with the well-respected University of Law (ULaw) on their Articled Apprenticeship Programme. Face to face two hour study sessions will take place twice a week between 18:00 and 20:00 (term time) and there will be webinars on Saturdays. Examinations will take place at the end of every term and the apprentices will be expected to study in their own time. Those on the programme will be treated in the same way as trainee solicitors when it comes to applying for a position as a newly qualified solicitor. At the end of the programme the apprentice will be asked to submit preferences for which area of law they want to qualify into and will be interviewed/assessed alongside the relevant group of trainees that will be qualifying at the same time. We are accepting applications from Sunday 31 January to Thursday 31 March. Unfortunately, any applications received after that date will not be considered.
