For our first event of 2018 we will be looking at some of the themes that are set to feature prominently during the year ahead.
Technology will inevitably play a central part, as a disrupting factor to both the law and lawyers themselves. The speakers that Travers Smith has selected for the session on the evening of Wednesday 21 February reflect this.
Expect plenty of debate about the gig economy in the coming months, as various legal challenges – including Uber’s clash with Transport for London – wind their way through the courts. Alex Fisher, a senior associate in Travers’ employment law team, will give his view on the future of this new employment model.
Automation is another area that’s going to be at the forefront of people’s minds. In law firms, the potential to improve service delivery through artificial intelligence has generated excitement recently. Barney Stannard, an associate in Travers’ dispute resolution team, will share his insights about what is happening on the ground.
Supplying the big picture view will be two of Travers’ partners, Dan Reavill and Emily Clark. Dan, a commercial, IP and technology specialist, will consider the current tech boom in the wider context of previous market cycles, while also giving his view on the challenges facing his clients in 2018. Tax expert Emily, meanwhile, will deliver her take on the way taxation can be used to harness the transformative forces sweeping through society for the greater good. There will also be an opportunity to get her view on the effect on the global economy of the major tax reforms set to be unleashed in the US.
With Dan and Emily jointly sharing the partner responsibility for graduate recruitment, students are also encouraged to ask questions about how they can best position themselves at a time of technological disruption to secure training contracts
After the Q&A session there will be drinks and networking with the speakers and a collection of the firm's trainees and members of its graduate recruitment team.
